Jews For Peace
With Israel once again on the
brink of war and Jewish people the world over
experiencing anti-Semitic attacks in their own
nations, as witnessed by synagogue burnings in
Syracuse, NY, France, London and attacks in South
Africa and Australia, and the stabbing of a yeshiva
student on a London bus, to mention only a few of
many recent events. According to Mimi
Baron Jankovits, the progenitor of this idea,
something must be done on an international level to
unite the Jewish people, and she has decided to take
the initiative. She explains, "It no
longer matters whether you were for or against Oslo
because when the guns are firing on Gilo, the
bullets do not distinguish between left and right.
We are one in the eyes of the Arabs, who seek to
make Jerusalem their capital through stones, Molotov
cocktails, and machine gun fire; just as we were one
to Hitler, even if it meant going back 8 generations
to find a Jewish relative in one's lineage."
"This is why I, and many others, are calling on
every Jew, and on our many friends, to unite at the
same moment to make a difference. On Monday,
November 1 at 6:00pm Israel time (see below for your
corresponding local time), the first day of the
Jewish month of Cheshvan, Stop! Stand Still! and
Unite with your fellow Jews in the following prayer:
"Dear G-d, bring us back from the brink of war and
bless us with peace, wisdom and healing. Guide us
together in love and harmony to our destiny. May we
find only favor in each other and witness the
hopeful vision of swords beaten into plowshares,
each under his vine and fig tree, unafraid, soon in
our days." Jankovits exclaims, "Just
Imagine, for one minute Jews of all backgrounds,
nationalities and affiliations will be united,
overlooking the differences that so blindly divide
us, to share the love and heritage that bind us
together for 3000 years. "For one minute,
our voices will be joined together in the same
thought, united in the same concern of love for
Israel, our fellow Jews and world peace.
"For one minute, all our spiritual, emotional and
physical resources will be united together in the
quest for a true and lasting peace. "Just
as the Jews of Israel stand together for moments of
silence and respect each spring in honor of the 6
million and our fallen soldiers, let us all join
together to take a stand for our future."
One may calculate one's local time to coincide with
Israel at 6:00pm, which will be 11:00am eastern
standard time (New York), 10:00am central time
(Chicago) and 8:00am pacific coast time (Los
Angeles), 5:00pm in Paris, 4:00pm in London, and
2:00pm in Sao Paulo. Organizers are
calling on supporters of the idea to pass this on to
a friend and post it on community bulletin boards,
synagogues and in schools. SHALOM!
